Ifeoma (Tonto Dikeh) and Raymond (Chigozie Atuanya) are a rich couple with lots of money to spend, a fleet of cars to drive and have a business office in a high-rise in the middle of the city. What they lack and waste sleep over is the lack of child to complete their happiness. Mike (Muna Obiekwe) follows his application one day and gets hired by both Ifeoma and Raymond to work as a marketing manager for their company.
Ifeoma continues pestering her husband for a child, and Raymond’s Mama (Christy Okonkwo) too couldn’t give the couple a break for a grandchild. Her visit to the couple becomes frequent and unannounced, and upon such visits, she always left Ifeoma crying because she’s either a non-child bearing witch or she must pack and leave her son. The pressure on Raymond becomes overbearing and embarrassing, and with little hesitation, is ready to go with the unorthodox idea of Ifeoma to find a virile young male to have sex with her so she can conceive.
Mike, strapped for cash, with little hesitation gives in to have sex with Ifeoma. You should have been in the room to see Raymond witnessing another man having affair with his wife. He stands to witness because Mike was only doing a job and not to have any sensual feeling towards Ifeoma. Funny scene, though. Soon, Ifeoma gets pregnant but secretly continues to have a rendezvous with Mike….
Growing up, I never had patience with Chinese movies for two reasons: Their stunts were always unrealistic. Then too, the most inexcusable element was when they dubbed dialogues or subtitled them. Oh, that killed me and turned me off! It always broke my concentration and at times I left the movie hardly knowing what it was all about. Did they ever know there were slow readers in the world out there? Beyond The Secret is hundred percent dubbed and dubbed badly. You can see a character’s lip moving way before you hear the voice, or long after the character’s voice dies, the lip is still wobbling. In commercial films where the market is competitive, such poor efforts can hardly be tolerated. If dubbing is an acceptable way of editing film for viewers, it should be done accurately.
I experience something with this movie which puzzles me but I try to cope. I became suspicious of the crew credit lineup when I noticed that the screenwriting credit is divided into two, as in ‘additional screenplay’. And during the viewing of the movie, to my surprise, Beyond The Secret morphed into Secret Game different movie with same storyline and characters. That is a sheer throw off for my reviewing pleasure. It could be for reasons of artistic rights, but if Nwosu Richard Diligence and Ekeje Chinedu Obim cowrote Beyond The Secret, why have another name Secret Game. To who does credit for Beyond The Secret belong? Wake me up when you have answers because this movie is quite a sleeper!
