Interview With Ernest Obi

I DIDN’T IMPREGNATE MY DAUGHTER, SAYS ACTOR OBI

Ernest Obi is a household name in Nollywood. As an actor and film director, he has seen the good, the bad and the ugly sides of the film industry and life itself. Being a star, Obi’s life is not devoid of controversy. One of the controversies that have dogged his life is when his ex-wife accused him of impregnating his step-daughter a number of times and subjecting the girl to several bouts of abortions. In this interview with DAVID AJIBOYE, Obi who is president of Actors Guild of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter, talked about his crashed marriage, the movie industry, his most embarrassing moment among others.

What is the most embarrassing moment of your life?
When my ex accused me of impregnating my daughter several times and had her terminate them. I was pushed to the wall and it got me thinking of murder. My woman and I separated in 2007 and she moved to London. I think she heard of my impending marriage to my fiancee and was angry so she came up with the allegations . I almost died. Two days later, she called me to apologise. I asked her to tell the press the truth but she said she could not face the world. I also could not go round to say it was a lie so we left it like that.

What could have been her reason for doing such a thing?
I don’t know and I don’t want to know. It is no longer important. I have moved on with my life. Let God judge between the two of us.

What was your reaction then?
The day I heard of it, I didn’t know what to do at first because I was confused. Absentmindedly, I walked into a church. Tears just ran down my face. I told the pastor what had happened and he asked the congregation to pray for me. I really thank that pastor and my fiancé who stood by me. Her friends mocked her but she told them that I could not do such a thing.

Ernest Obi 1What do you think is the reason marriages are crashing especially among artistes?
Marriages are breaking up everywhere and it is not restricted to artistes alone. I always tell people not to get into a relationship out of pity. It is the worst thing you can ever do to yourself.

What attracted you to the lady you want to marry?
It is the fact that she does not see me as an actor. She sees me as her husband, friend and above all, someone she can talk to. If I make the wrong move, she tells me straight to my face without blinking and without caring if I am angry or not. She is a very principled person, down to earth and believes in me.

Any marriage intention?
We are looking at having the traditional marriage this December, although we are having an argument that December is not a very good time for people to attend functions. However, we are still considering it.

Where did you meet her?
She came to register to act about seven years ago. I saw her and told her not to act. She asked why because she had already paid for the form but I told her not to act and that was how the whole thing started.

Was the other lady still in your life then?
No. We had our problems then and we were separated.

Does your previous lover have children for you?
Yes. She has two children for me. She is in England with them.

What part of your fiancée’s body appeals to you most?
Every part of her body appeals to me. If you see her, you will understand what I am saying. She is an angel and the love of my life.

What does she do?
She works with an IT firm here in Lagos. She studied Linguistics and majored in French.

Can you tell us about your family and educational background?
My father was Chief Dara Onyia Egwu, the Oba 1 of Ukpor. He married many wives but my mother was the first. I attended Onward Nursery and Primary School, Surulere, and Baptist Academy Secondary School. From there, I went to the University of Ife, where I studied Dramatic Arts and majored in directing.

How was growing up among your sisters like?
It was fun. I was my daddy’s pet. I slept in his bed even while I was still in secondary school. He helped me to have focus. I was extremely comfortable while growing up. I thank God for my life because I almost became a girl. My sisters doted on me.They thought I looked like a girl so, they would always want to do girlish things to me like apply lipstick on my lips until my mother came back from the U.S. and screamed that they should stop turning her only son into a girl.

How do you see women?
I respect women a lot. Maybe, it is because I grew up among women. However, women are the most difficult species on earth. Men are generally childish. We love attention. We want to be pampered even when it is not necessary. Women, on the other hand, are very complicated. They are like picking a piece of cloth from the middle of a pile. If you are in a hurry, you will rumple it all. So, you take it one piece at a time until you get to that one you want.

There is this complaint about professionalism in Nollywood. What is your take on that?
I disagree totally with you. I don’t understand what you mean by professionalism. People who started from nothing are now making something out of nothing. I think that is the height of professionalism.
Being a professional is not holding a PhD in a particular field. It takes dedication and commitment to become a professional. If you have a PhD and you are not dedicated to that field, you will fail.

When did you become famous?
Obi 2I don’t know because I started from stage and moved to TV. I think what actually sent me into the limelight was the role I played in The Glamour Girls. In the film, I cooked and washed my girl’s underwear. I did it perfectly that I caught the fancy of filmmakers. After that it went on and on.

Do you think you have arrived at the peak of your career?
No, I have not even gone half way. I need to be able to buy a car for myself, my mother, buy property, open schools and others without shaking. With the way things are in Nigeria, one needs to sit up to survive. There is no money in this country and majority of the people are crying. Yet, the banks were giving N88billion to individuals. To be frank, I have not arrived at the peak of my career at all, I still have a long way to go.

Was there a time you thought you went into the wrong profession?
No. It is a dream come true. I was once a manager in a shipping line and I also manned a company, but I was never happy. Nothing in life would have made me happier than acting.

Was there a time your parents thought or felt you chose the wrong career?
Initially, my mum thought so. She thought I was too intelligent to be acting. She thought I should be outside the country where my sisters are. I am extremely stubborn, so when she realised I was bent on doing it, she left me alone and today, she is enjoying it.

Pains and gains of fame
You cannot balance it out. Sometimes, it paves way for you but at other times, it becomes the reason why you will be hated and humiliated. There are occasions where police will recognise you and allow you to pass but there are days when they will be stubborn simply because they feel you are pompous. People also disrespect you because they feel you are better than them even when you don’t feel so. Sometimes, someone may call you when you are sleeping and if you tell him or her to call back, they take offense. I can go on and on.

Left Alone

By Ali Baylay

Production: Busy Brain Entertainment; Cast: Jim Iyke,Omotola Jolade,Emeka Enyiocha; Director: Livinus Nwabueze; Executive Producer: Livinus Nwabueze; 1.15 mins.

The plot of gangster movies come straight from the day to day happenings in the society as brought to us in our newspapers and evenning news headlines,   and this is a subject that interests not only film makers but even the general public. In the US, gangster movies thrived in the era of the Great Depression, when jobs were scarce and families could not find work, lest make a decent living. Crime became rampart and the caricature of these criminals on the silver screen was entertaining to the general moviegoers. Characters in Little Ceasar (1930), Public Enemy (1931), Bonnie and Clyde (1967), and not so recent movies like Natural Born Killers and Thelma and Louis, both in early 90s were people we can identify with as our neighbors and therefore be entertained by them in our living rooms. Since gangster movies do not warrant much crowd and other expenses, at this time in US film history, about six studios produced nearly 300 gangster films. With rampart crime in Nigeria due to lack of work or sources of decent  livelihood, Nollywood must be presenting its case in Left Alone.

Some characteristics of a gangster movie include, iconic use of guns; tragic resolutions where the main characters have a shoot out; one of the two gangster lovers (there’s always a broad in gangster movies) gets shot and dies in the other’s arm, in some alley (Jim Iyke and Omotala Jolade in Left Alone); in car wrecks pushed over cliffs; both gangster lovers are shot together and die together while holding hands. All in all, gangsters’ lives in crime fiction always crumble, especially to signify that crime won’t pay. A classic gangster movie has to have a larger than life performer to carry it through and through, as Jim Iyke in Left Alone.

AloneYou never want to miss the beginning of a gangster movie if you’re reviewing it. Most stories are told in the first five minutes of screen time. In the case of Left Alone, if you missed the opening sequence, all you have left is lots of gun plays; some one is in control of a mysterious briefcase and heaven knows what’s in it. Another person chases the other in some alley. The briefcase shows up again after more guns fired and bloodshed. Then a little scamper in an alley; wow!, someone gets arrested; no!, she escapes from the hospital and another chase begins. Amidst this all there’s not an intelligible dialogue from any body except Kelvin, “you killed my mother, am gonna shoot you between your balls!”

Left Alone is a story of a heist gone soar between three criminals, Kelvin (Jim Iyke), Cassandra (Omotala Jolade) and Briggs (Emeka Enyiocha) over the sharing of  loot. At the beginning of the movie, Briggs in an old model Mercedes runs into Kelvin, helping his disabled mother out of an alley while Cassandra, clutching to a briefcase tows behind. Shock wave goes through Briggs and goes for his gun, ramming shots into Kelvin’s mother and kills her. Police arrives on the scene and Cassandra gets arrested and is forced to confess, but makes her way out by faking sick and runs from the hospital. Main while, Kelvin  goes under and joins pastoral service for a church, while Briggs creeps in alleys looking for both Kelvin and Cassandra.

One thing with caper films, there’s no winner and in the end the characters are always trapped with no way out. Some brave ones even end up taking their own lives. In the finale of Left Alone, Cassandra goes back to retrieve the briefcase, both Kelvin and Briggs meet with her in this backyard alley, Kelvin with few exchanges with Briggs shoots Briggs and he falls. While Kelvin and Cassandra are locked in kiss, thinking they’re in the clear, Briggs comes back to and shoots Cassandra in the back. Of the three criminals only Kelvin is left alone, in Left Alone.

Tonto Dikeh Dates Fred Nuamah

BY DAVID AJIBOYE
David Ajiboye
Nollywood’s current hottest, richest and pretty-faced young actress, Tonto Dike, who once dated Nigerian top music producer, Don Jazzy, has found the best rhythm to her heart’s desire in Ghana, www.africanmoviestar.com has gathered.

The light-skinned actress, a close source told this medium, is having a clandestine love affair with Ghanaian new actor and producer, Fred Nuamah, who also doubles as manager of Ghana’s International Boxing Federation (IBF) Bantamweight champion, Joseph Agbeko and an erstwhile radio presenter.

Tonto and Fred

Tonto and Fred

Not surprisingly, the two suspected lovebirds have denied having any amorous relationship. While the actor said he does not even know the sexy-lipped actress, she on the other hand informed that they are ‘just friends’.

A couple of weeks ago, Tonto was in Ghana to shoot her new movie with Young Father Productions, owned by Samuel Ruffy of ‘Honey Kuchi-Kuchi’ advert fame. Fred, according to a  reliable source, was all over the place with Tonto.

On three different occasions, in the middle of the night, Fred was allegedly spotted sneaking in and out of the Genesis Hotel, located off the Accra-Kasoa road, where the actress had lodged.

Tonto, the source continued, could not make time to complete her production and had to leave for Nigeria. Some members of the production, the source said, blamed Fred for Tonto’s inability to finish shooting. Fred, the source disclosed, came to pick Tonto up while on set “and that was the end”.

The next time the production heard of the two, they were at the Kotoka International Airport as she sneaked out of the country.

However, the movie’s director, John Izedonmi, who confirmed Tonto’s inability to finish her job while in Ghana, said Fred could not be blamed.

“Fred has nothing to do with Tonto’s failure to complete the movie. It is not just possible that he would walk to location and pick her like that. Apparently, Tonto might have thought she had completed shooting her role and asked Fred to pick her up.

It was after she left that the Production Assistant (PA), after looking through the script, realized that she was left with four more scenes to do,” he said.

According to him, Tonto would be returning sometime soon to complete her scenes.

We gathered that a few days after Tonto left the country, Fred followed her to Nigeria “to continue from where they left off”’. But when contacted, the dark-skinned and afro hair-styled gentleman, in his reaction, said he does not even know Tonto Dike.

He admitted going to Nigeria, but said he was in that country to see Ramsey Nouah over his up-coming movie.

Sadly, however, Tonto let the cat out of the bag when in a telephone interview she said Fred was a friend.

Hear her: “I have a relationship with Fred? Are you kidding me? Is that what people are saying? That is very funny. It is a stupid rumour to me. Fred is my friend just like every other person that I have met. I do not have any amorous relationship with Fred.”

Efforts to get Fred to react to Tonto’s claim proved futile as his close associates said he had left for Las Vegas to oversee arrangements for Joseph Agbeko’s next fight.

Ramsey Nouah however confirmed Fred’s trip to Nigeria  saying, “Yeah, he came looking for me a couple of days back. He came to see me. He came to drop a script for me. He called me and we had an appointment. That’s it.”

Frank Rajah also confirmed reports that he introduced Fred to Tonto but denied they are dating.

“Tonto is my good friend and when I was going to pick her, Fred went with me and everybody in the industry knows Fred is a very kind-hearted person. When Tonto met him, she liked him because the guy is a kind-hearted person and they related very well.

When Tonto was leaving, she called Fred to pick her up to the airport and he went to take her straight to the airport.

So I don’t see anything wrong with being a friend to somebody. Fred is a friend to everybody in the industry. Many of the Nigerian stars who come here stay in his house,” he concluded.
